Liberal held McAuley Catholic without a first half field goal and cruised to a 42-22 road victory in the girls basketball season opener.

McAuley Catholic struggled keeping possession of the basketball and making shots, and went 4-of-8 from the free throw line in the first quarter for their only points of the first half. Liberal staked themselves to a 24-4 lead at the half, and made the 20-point margin stick. Liberal was led in scoring with 13 points from Taylor Swarnes, with Bailey Couch and Ellaina LaNear each adding 9 points.

The win snaps a 5-game losing streak to McAuley, and gives Liberal a 1-0 start. Liberal will next host Thomas Jefferson on Tuesday in another Class 1 District 6 matchup.

The Liberal Bulldogs boys basketball team earned the win in their opener 57-47 to complete the sweep in McAuley Catholic.

Liberal led 9-8 after a first quarter that saw four lead changes. After a pair of lead changes and another tie score early in the second quarter, Liberal's Matt Boehne drained his first of three 3's in the quarter to give the Bulldogs a little breathing room. Liberal led 30-23 at halftime, and led by as many as 16 in the 4th quarter en route to a 1-0 start.

Liberal was led on offense by 20 points from Boehne, 9 from Payton Morrow, and 8 from Chase Ray. McAuley Catholic got 13 points from Michael Parrigon and 10 from Noah Black.

The next varsity boys basketball game is set for next Thursday, December 1st at Baxter Springs.
