A free "Matter of Balance" course is being offered online by Care Connection for Aging Services. The course begins on September 23rd and is designed to alleviate the fear of falling for older adults. It's an eight-week course, to be offered from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Fridays. The course will be presented live by instructors on the Zoom online platform so that participants may join from wherever they may be by using a computer, tablet, or smartphone.

Trained instructors will teach about the importance of exercise in preventing falls and how to practice exercises to improve strength, coordination, and balance. The course also addresses home safety.

Other topics include being assertive, developing positive strategies for change, reducing barriers to exercise, identifying physical risk factors for falls, personal action planning, recognizing misconceptions about falls, and moving from self-defeating to self-motivating thoughts. The curriculum includes group discussions, mutual problem-solving, role-playing activities, and a few homework assignments.

If participants need help with Zoom, Care Connection can provide one-on-one assistance. The course may be available via a large-screen TV set up at a local senior center. To find out about that availability, please contact your senior center. To learn more about the course, call 1-8000-748-7826. To register and receive the Zoom link, visit
